Final Report Cards & Summer Learning
Date: June 10, 2024
Principal Zlatunich: I hope your students had a fabulous last day of school. Final Report Card posted on the first week of June.
Summer is now here and it’s crucial to keep children engaged in learning to prevent summer learning loss. As little as 2–3 hours per week (or 30 minutes a day) can make a difference. Our district has gathered a variety of resources to facilitate this, providing access to online educational materials and suggested activities to keep students active and stimulated. There are Summer Learning and Summer Enrichment activities grouped by grade level. Students are encouraged to work on the grade level they were assigned for the 2023–24 school year or lower to build foundational skills. They may do any of the activities that interest them.
Let’s work together to ensure our children continue to grow academically, emotionally, and socially during the break.

From Principal Zlatunich: Anonymous Reporting
Date: April 17, 2024
Greetings Taylor Families,
We are pleased to announce that our school has enrolled with STOPit, by STOPit Solutions.
STOPit is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators.
Our students will have access to the STOPit mobile app, which has two simple but powerful features.
Specifically, the program educates students to:
Recognize the signs of at-risk behaviors
Take every sign and signal seriously
Report it anonymously through STOPit App/Web or 24/7 Incident Response Center
Submit photo or video evidence (App/Web Only Alert designated administrators to issues and risks early, before they escalate
No personal information is needed to use STOPit. The only way personally identifiable information will be accessible through STOPit is if a requester voluntarily includes it within the content of a request or message.
Both our school and STOPit are committed to protecting the privacy of student data. STOPit is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, spearheaded by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association. You may review STOPit’s Privacy Policy for details, including more information on how anonymous reporting works.
Students have the power to help put an end to harmful and inappropriate behavior they see online through social media and other means. They can use STOPit to reach out for help if they or a peer are facing a personal crisis or experiencing bullying, abuse, or are otherwise in need of assistance. Our goal with STOPit is to create safer, kinder, school communities both online and off.
Please note that we will be launching STOPit with our students in their April 17 SEL/Advisory class. At that time, your child will be invited to download the STOPit app from Apple App Store or Google Play on his or her smartphone or tablet at no charge.
We encourage you to download the STOPit app and search for your student’s school using the directory. You can privately ask for help for your student, family, others you care about, or even acquaintances who appear to need help. For a video on how to use STOPit, go to: Student Training Video.
Together, we can make sure everyone in our community gets what they need to thrive. Thank you!

Math Scores Above Average
Date: February 26, 2024
From Superintendent Lisa Chinn Hickey:
I recently shared with you that the state of California recently recognized Taylor Middle School’s math department for its work to increase student proficiency in the understanding of mathematics. They found what is clear in our student test scores— Millbrae students have rates of math understanding and proficiency that are far higher than the state or San Mateo County as a whole. Here are some statistics that I found interesting, and you may as well.
The percent of Millbrae students exceeding standard is 129% higher than the state average. (38.22% versus 17.14%). Another way of saying this is that our students are more than twice as likely to be proficient as a typical state student. Roughly the same thing is true among students in our county. A percentage comparison between Millbrae students and San Mateo County students as a whole by this measure shows that Millbrae students are 118% higher.
Millbrae ESD students are 75% more likely to be proficient or exceeding standard than their state and San Mateo County peers.
See the district’s board report on our 2023 California Assessment of Student Performance & Progress (CAASPP).
What accounts for this discrepancy? While differences like this can be explained by many factors not least of which is your partnership with our schools, we believe that part of this difference is the quality of math instruction our students receive during the 9+ years they spend with us. Our teachers care about math learning and understand how important math skills are for future success. And we know that you do as well.
There is, of course, more work to be done. We won’t rest on our success and we won’t be fully satisfied until every student masters this important subject, but I thought you’d want to know a bit about how our students’ math performance stacks up.

COVID Kits & Holiday Health
Date: December 22, 2023
As the year comes to a close, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for partnering with us over these months and the last couple of years in taking measures for illness prevention, keeping sick students home, having them wear masks when there’s a cough, and encouraging thorough hand washing.
Although COVID tests continue to be provided to you for easy access in the event your student becomes ill, we are fortunate that we have seen few cases of COVID in our district this fall, even after the Thanksgiving break.
The break might be a good time to take a look at your Emergency Contact List and add a friend, neighbor, or family member to the list of people who are allowed to pick your student up from school in the event of an illness or injury that results in the need for the student to go home or seek medical evaluation/attention.
As a reminder, our district’s policy (Parent-Student Handbook pages 46–47) is that when you’re contacted to pick up a student who is ill or injured, either you or a member on your Emergency Contact List who has permission to have your child released to them be at the school within 30 minutes.
Your student received a COVID kit on December 21, 2023. Although surveillance testing is no longer recommended (testing in the absence of symptoms), the San Mateo County Office of Education recommends testing your student if there are COVID symptoms (runny/stuffy nose, cough, fever, headache, body aches, stomach ache). There are 2 tests per box, allowing for an extra test if additional symptoms develop before school resumes on Monday, January 8.
We are fortunate and grateful to work with all of your children. Thank you!
Happy and Healthy Holidays!
The Health Services Team
Happy Holidays
Date: December 22, 2023
At the midpoint of this academic year, we feel a deep sense of pride and gratitude for the remarkable journey we’ve experienced together. Taking a moment to contemplate the achievements, growth, and unity within our school community is truly an honor.
To our students, you are the heartbeat and spirit of Taylor Middle School. Your steadfast dedication, resilience, and love for learning have not just influenced the school but have also inspired all of us fortunate enough to witness your academic successes and personal milestones. You continuous high standards serve as a reminder of the incredible potential within each one of you.
To our staff, your extraordinary commitment to fostering the growth of our middle school students is truly commendable. Every day, your expertise, empathy, and enthusiasm resonate within the classrooms, cultivating an atmosphere where curiosity thrives, and enduring lessons are absorbed. Your influence goes beyond the curriculum, shaping both the values and skills our students need to navigate life’s complexities.
As we navigate the holiday season, let’s not just rejoice in our accomplishments but also embrace the spirit of community that unites us. May this time brim with joy, laughter, and the warmth of loved ones. As we gather with family and friends, let’s extend our thoughts and support to those who may be facing challenges and may be less fortunate.
Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and joyful winter break filled with reflection, gratitude, and the making of cherished memories. Anticipating continued growth and success in the upcoming year. See you all January 8.

Notes from School Nurse
Date: November 10, 2023
With runny noses, coughs, and fevers increasing, here’s the California Department of Public Health guidelines for students recovering from sickness.
While masking is not required, we ask that you consider sending your child to school wearing a mask when there is a runny nose or more than an occasional cough. Thank you!
Vomiting: Stay home if vomiting has occurred two or more times in 24 hours.
Return when vomiting has ended overnight, and your child is able to hold down liquids and food. Recommend frequent handwashing.
Cold/Cough: May include runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, congestion, body aches, and/or cough, typically lasting up to 7–10 days.
May attend school or child care unless the child has one of the following:
Fever (see “Fever” for return guidance)
Difficulty with or rapid rate of breathing (see “Difficult or noisy breathing”)
Cough is severe or the child cannot catch breath after coughing
For a cough suspected to be associated with asthma: coughing that cannot be controlled by the medications that the childcare or school has been instructed to use
Fever: An oral (under the tongue), temporal (forehead), rectal, or axillary (underarm) temperature above 100.4°F (38°C). Axillary (underarm) measurements should be used only if other options are not available. Follow instructions for the specific thermometer, including directions for use, cleaning and covers (if applicable). If a temperature is close to 100.4°F, repeat to confirm the result.
It is ONLY recommended to take a child’s temperature if the child seems ill, feels hot, or has other symptoms or signs of illness. Checking the temperature of a child or group of children to allow entry (also known as screening) is NOT recommended in school or childcare settings.
Unless otherwise directed by a healthcare provider, a child with another symptom or sign of illness who also has a fever should NOT attend school or child care.
Return when both occur:
Fever went away in the night – without using fever-reducing medications, e.g., Tylenol®, Advil®, Motrin® (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) - and is still gone when the temperature is taken in the morning without medication AND
Other symptoms are improving and the child can participate comfortably in routine activities.

Your family could qualify for important benefits, like low-cost internet and discounted pricing on computers.
Any information you share is confidential and protected.
Takes less than two minutes to finish.
The California Department of Education (CDE) funds school districts using a system called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). Significant additional funding is allocated to school districts that have students who meet certain criteria, including being designated as low income. To receive these additional funds our district must be able to identify if your child meets the above criteria. These funds will be used to provide additional support to our schools for things such as promoting safer schools, offering students increased opportunities to be college and career ready, enhanced student and family wellness, additional academic support as well as increased parent training opportunities.
